Self-acceptance is defined as “an individual’s acceptance of all of his/her attributes, positive or negative.” It includes body acceptance, self-protection from negative criticism, and believing in one’s capacities.
Ultimately we will not ever be perfect, it’s not possible as human beings. We all have negative attributes and by trying to be perfect you will only set yourself up for failure from the beginning which will just contribute to low self esteem.
Instead strive to be the best possible person you can be – but accept and acknowledge you will mess up along the way. Accept that these moments are part of life – and instead of punishing yourself for them – LEARN from them – recognise the things you don’t like about yourself and try to come up with alternative ways to do things differently.
It’s a good thing to want to become the best person you possibly can be – but if you want to be happy in the long run – you must accept you for the person you are – warts and all.
