Why Mindset Training Often doesn’t work

For many years Mindset coaching actually made me feel like MORE OF A FAILURE.

Think positive, my mindset coach used to tell me, and your world will reflect this and change. Focus on the good things in life she would say. Be grateful and the neural pathways in your brain will actually alter. Your world will then flourish from within.

So I worked really hard on manifesting this positive me, as I desperately wanted to grow my business and become the leader that I knew that I could be. To bring in more money and live a life of freedom and meaning.

Oh, I wanted this so so much.

Why Mindset Training Often doesn’t work

For many years Mindset coaching actually made me feel like MORE OF A FAILURE.

Focus on the good things in life she would say. Be grateful and the neural pathways in your brain will actually alter. Your world will then flourish from within. So I worked really hard on manifesting this positive me, as I desperately wanted to grow my business and become the leader that I knew that I could be. To bring in more money and live a life of freedom and meaning.

Oh, I wanted this so so much.

So I worked hard on my mindset. I got very good at seeing the good in things. Of being grateful for the things that I had. I got good at reframing the bad things so I could see the positive and opportunities in it all. So why did I still struggle so much to move my life forward?

Why inside, did all this positive thinking make me feel even smaller than before?

Every time I tried to grow my business, even with all the positive thinking in the world, I would still hit huge resistance that knocked me 10 steps backwards.

As a result, I would procrastinate, doubt myself, self-sabotage myself and ultimately lose even more faith in my abilities to move forward.

The problem with traditional mindset training is we try to stop our negative behaviours, thoughts and feelings by distraction tactics, positive thinking or a combination of other tips, tricks and strategies. We then very often get disheartened and frustrated when these ‘amazing techniques’ do not work. We are told to ‘think positive’, or practice daily gratitude, under the promise that our negative thoughts and feelings will then go away.

We then feel like even more of a failure, when in reality they DON’T completely disappear. Hence worsening our belief system even further that we must be fundamentally flawed.

Why Popular Strategies & Techniques often don’t work?

Well the problem is, that for many of us we are attempting to overcome fears and negative behaviours, thoughts and feelings that have originated in (often forgotten) negative experiences in our childhood that have programmed our brains to function in a certain way.

This programming then affects EVERYTHING we experience as adults such as our personality, the way we view the world, the way we view others. And the way we view ourselves.

Our subconscious programming is constantly operating underneath our conscious awareness and these invisible memories from the past show up daily and rule our entire existence and present lives.

For example – if we have an underlying fear of failure, due to experiences where we were repeatedly made to feel that we are not good enough earlier in our lifetime (even if we cannot consciously remember these experiences), we may become triggered by these invisible memories that fester in our subconscious mind whenever we try to achieve something in the present moment.

When triggered we can have a mixture of unpleasant reactions. These may be fairly mild on one end of the spectrum, and therefore don’t actually stop us from achieving our goals, to extremely severe and disabling on the other.

The negative self-talk and anxiety may show up at this point. Or we may Procrastinate. We may doubt ourselves and care too much what other people think and back off from our attempts to move forward.

Sometimes we feel like we’ve got an invisible barrier and we somehow self sabotage our attempts to move forward.

Somehow we just get in our own way.

This in turn strengthens the original fears and underlying belief system that we are not good enough, causing us very often to lose even more confidence. And so the cycle continues.

In these situations, mindset training is NOT ENOUGH..

WITHOUT first having a true understanding of the underlying cause, our attempts to overcome our difficulties very often comes from a place of frustration, disconnection and self-hatred. In other words, we will try to REJECT and IGNORE the behaviours, thoughts and feelings that we don’t like about us and REPLACE them with positive thinking or other mindset techniques. But the problem is that we are disconnecting from a part of us that is really struggling in this approach. We are ignoring the darkness and pain that caused these symptoms to show up in the first place, instead hating those parts of us even further.

The issue is, that by rejecting the parts of us that are not serving us, we are actually confirming the underlying belief that’s causing them to show up in the first place:

That we are somehow not good enough, as the person that we naturally are.

The ONLY way to overcome these self-sabotaging behaviours, thoughts and feelings PERMANENTLY, if the cause is originating from self-limiting belief systems born out of negative earlier experience, is to come from a place of love and compassion. Ultimately the symptoms are telling you that a deeper part of you is struggling.

Nurture that part of you and you will find that the rest of you will flourish.
